Bill Summary
This bill provides that within 180 days after the bill's effective date a paid or part-paid fire department or force will adopt, review, and update, if needed, at least annually, a policy that addresses the job-related issues of any pregnant member of that department or force. These include, but not limited to, disclosure of a pregnancy, issuance of a medical certificate by the member's physician in regard to any limitations on job-related duties, and the availability of any light-duty or non-hazardous assignments. The policy will also provide that a pregnant firefighter will be given information as to when certain job-related tasks may not be appropriate for the member; the use of leave time for pregnancy, and the continuation of employee benefits. In creating this policy the department or force will be guided by the standards of the National Fire Protection Association, or of another such professional organization, that apply to the job-related issues affecting pregnant firefighters.
AI Summary
This bill requires all paid or part-paid fire departments in New Jersey to develop and annually review a comprehensive policy addressing job-related issues for pregnant firefighters within 180 days of the bill's enactment. The policy must cover key areas such as pregnancy disclosure procedures, medical certification of job duty limitations, and availability of light-duty or non-hazardous assignments. The policy must also provide pregnant firefighters with information about which job-related tasks may be inappropriate during pregnancy, guidelines for using leave time, and assurances about the continuation of employee benefits. When developing these policies, fire departments must follow standards established by professional organizations like the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which are designed to support the workplace safety and accommodation needs of pregnant firefighters. The goal is to create a standardized, supportive approach to managing pregnancy-related workplace considerations in fire departments, ensuring the health and safety of both pregnant firefighters and their colleagues.
