This bill, called the Fast-Track Nuclear Now Act, aims to remove previous restrictions on nuclear power reactor construction in Illinois and create a more supportive regulatory environment for new nuclear facilities. Specifically, the bill eliminates existing prohibitions on constructing nuclear power reactors with a nameplate capacity over 300 megawatts and declares it state policy to actively facilitate new nuclear facility construction. The legislation requires the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security to collaborate with proposed nuclear projects, the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other relevant state agencies to reduce regulatory barriers to new nuclear facility development. By amending the Public Utilities Act and the Illinois Nuclear Facility Safety Act, the bill streamlines the process for obtaining certificates of public convenience and necessity for nuclear power projects and signals a policy shift toward encouraging nuclear energy development in the state. The bill takes effect immediately upon becoming law, signaling a potentially significant change in Illinois' approach to nuclear energy infrastructure.
