This bill modifies the Michigan Vehicle Code to allow regional transit authorities to impose an additional tax on vehicle registrations within their public transit regions, not exceeding $1.20 for every $1,000 of a vehicle's list price, provided this tax is approved by a majority of voters in the region during a regular November election. The bill clarifies that the ballot question must specify how these tax proceeds will be used, and the funds can only be used for comprehensive transportation purposes as defined by law. Before being placed on the ballot, the tax proposal must be adopted by the regional transit authority's board of directors and certified to county clerks at least 70 days before the election. If approved by voters, the Secretary of State will collect this tax on behalf of the regional transit authority, deducting necessary collection expenses.
