This bill expands the definition of "veteran" to include individuals who served in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps (NOAACOC) or the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (USPHSCC), and creates special vehicle registration plates for these service members. Specifically, the bill allows members of these two uniformed services to apply for special registration plates that display a veteran-specific vignette and have the word "veteran" inscribed on them. These special plates will be issued without a service fee, can be used on passenger vehicles, and will be renewed without requiring additional proof of service. The bill also ensures that disabled veterans from these services can receive disability tabs for their plates. The legislation modifies existing Michigan vehicle code to recognize these less-known uniformed services as equivalent to traditional military branches for the purposes of veteran recognition, thereby providing these service members with a way to publicly acknowledge their contributions and service to the United States.
