This bill aims to enhance educational benefits for veterans and service members by making two key modifications to the Post-9/11 Educational Assistance program. First, the bill provides an additional 15 months of educational assistance to veterans who have exhausted their original entitlement and require extra time to complete remedial or deficiency courses at an institution of higher learning. To qualify, veterans must have used their original entitlement within the past 180 days and need more than the standard credit hours to complete their educational program. Second, the bill increases flexibility for service members to transfer their educational benefits by allowing individuals without current dependents to designate their educational assistance transfer to potential future dependents, which was previously not permitted. These changes are designed to address gaps in the existing educational assistance program that can prevent veterans from completing their educational goals and limit their ability to support their families' educational needs. The bill would be known as the "Veterans Education and Transfer Extension Act of 2025" or the "VET Extension Act of 2025" and would modify existing provisions in title 38 of the United States Code.
