This bill modifies Nevada law regarding short-term car rentals by changing the requirements for insurance verification. Currently, short-term car rental companies are mandated to require proof of insurance that meets minimum state coverage requirements when leasing a passenger car. The proposed bill would change this from a requirement to an option, allowing rental companies to choose whether they want to request proof of insurance. If a potential renter cannot provide proof of insurance, the rental company may now offer to sell them a temporary insurance policy at standard market rates or refer them to a third party that can provide such coverage. If the renter refuses to purchase temporary insurance, the rental company can decline to lease the vehicle. The bill maintains existing provisions that prohibit rental companies from engaging in unfair or coercive practices when offering optional insurance or damage waivers, and continues to regulate the maximum charges for damage waivers. The bill will become effective upon passage and approval, potentially providing rental companies more flexibility in their insurance verification processes.
