This bill requires local boards of education in Alabama to transition to a semi-monthly salary payment schedule beginning August 1, 2027, where employees will be paid twice per month (on the first and sixteenth days) with one payday in arrears. If the scheduled payment days fall on a weekend or holiday, payments will be made on the last workday before the scheduled date, with a special provision for October 1st payments. Local boards of education have the option to opt out of this requirement by passing a written resolution and filing it with the State Superintendent of Education within 60 days. The Comptroller, State Superintendent of Education, and State Board of Education are tasked with developing implementation policies, and the Legislature emphasizes that this change should not reduce any employee's annual compensation. The bill is set to become effective on July 1, 2026, giving school districts ample time to prepare for the new payment schedule.
