This bill requires the state Medicaid plan to cover GLP-1 medications, which are a class of drugs, when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider and deemed medically necessary for patients who are either obese (with a Body Mass Index, or BMI, of 30 or higher) or have a BMI of 27 or higher along with at least one weight-related health condition such as Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia (abnormal blood lipid levels), obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, prediabetes, or metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease. The Department of Health and Human Services must submit any necessary changes to the state Medicaid plan to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) by January 1, 2027, and the act will take effect 60 days after its passage.
