This bill modifies existing New Jersey law regarding physicians' reporting requirements for patients with certain medical conditions that could impact driving safety. Specifically, the bill changes a mandatory reporting requirement for physicians treating patients 16 years and older with recurrent convulsive seizures, periods of unconsciousness, or motor coordination impairments (such as epilepsy) from a mandatory 24-hour reporting requirement to a permissive reporting option. The bill shifts the language from "shall" (meaning must) to "may" (meaning optional), and updates the administrative title from "Director of the Division of Motor Vehicles" to "Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission". The bill allows, but does not require, physicians to report these medical conditions to the Motor Vehicle Commission, giving doctors more discretion in determining whether a patient's medical condition might pose a driving risk. The chief administrator of the Motor Vehicle Commission, in consultation with the State Commissioner of Health, will continue to be responsible for creating the reporting forms for these medical condition reports.
