This resolution honors John Kautzman, a prominent Indianapolis lawyer who passed away on October 20, 2025, at age 66. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, Kautzman graduated from Indiana University and the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, and spent 40 years at the Ruckelshaus Kautzman Blackwell law firm, specializing in state and federal criminal and civil litigation. He was deeply involved in legal professional organizations, serving as Indianapolis Bar Association president in 2005 and receiving its highest Luminary Award, and was also elected to the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, which invites only the top one percent of state lawyers. Kautzman was particularly known for his work with the Fraternal Order of Police, for whom he advocated and defended officers, earning the National Fraternal Order of Police Attorney of the Year Award in 2023. The resolution acknowledges his professional achievements and personal life, noting he is survived by his wife Kit and their children David, Kate, and Julia, and expresses hope that he will be remembered as a loving husband, accomplished lawyer and musician, and great friend.
