This bill establishes a federal grant program to help colleges and universities create and maintain Student Veteran Centers, which are dedicated on-campus spaces designed to support military veterans pursuing higher education. The bill authorizes the Secretary of Education to award grants up to $500,000 to institutions of higher education that have a significant number of student veterans, with priority given to schools in regions with large veteran populations, those offering comprehensive veteran support services, and those committed to veteran-specific programming. Eligible institutions must submit an application demonstrating a sustainability plan for the Student Veteran Center and must use the funds to establish a centralized office providing services such as benefits counseling, academic support, transitioning assistance, networking opportunities, and mental health resources. The centers must include a lounge or meeting space for veterans and be staffed by trained employees, including veterans. The grant program will run for 4 years, and the Secretary of Education is required to submit a congressional report evaluating the program's effectiveness and impact on student veteran success, as well as develop a website detailing best practices for supporting student veterans. The bill recognizes the unique challenges veterans face when transitioning from military to academic life and aims to provide comprehensive support to help them succeed in higher education.
