This bill modifies the election process for the East Chicago school board by changing how board members are elected. Currently, three board members are elected from specific districts and two are elected at large. Under the new law, effective July 1, 2026, all five board members will be elected at large by voters across the entire school corporation. The bill eliminates the existing district-based election system and replaces it with a fully at-large election process. Candidates will need to file nomination petitions with the circuit court clerk, including their name, residence address, and signatures from at least 100 registered voters within the school corporation. Elections will continue to be held every four years, with three members elected in 2026, 2030, and so on, and two members elected in 2028, 2032, and so on. The bill also specifies that board members will serve four-year terms beginning January 1 after their election and are expected to represent the interests of the entire school corporation, not just a specific district.
