Bill Summary

Postpartum care for new mothers on Medicaid. Requires that: (1) certain health care providers; (2) hospitals; and (3) the office of the secretary of family and social services or a managed care organization that has contracted with the office under the Medicaid program; ensure that a Medicaid recipient or an individual eligible for Medicaid who gives birth schedules a follow-up appointment for postpartum care that is not later than 60 days from the date the woman gives birth. (The introduced version of this bill was prepared by the interim study committee on public health, behavioral health, and human services.)

AI Summary

This bill requires hospitals with maternity units, healthcare providers who provided prenatal or delivery care, and the Indiana Medicaid office or its managed care organizations to help ensure that women who have given birth and are either Medicaid recipients or Medicaid-eligible schedule a postpartum checkup within 60 days of giving birth. The bill amends Indiana's healthcare code by adding a new section that mandates these entities take responsibility for helping new mothers arrange a follow-up medical appointment during the critical postpartum period. By setting a specific timeline and assigning responsibility to multiple healthcare stakeholders, the bill aims to improve postpartum care and monitoring for women on Medicaid, potentially helping to identify and address health issues that can emerge in the weeks following childbirth. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2026, which provides time for healthcare systems and providers to prepare for implementing the new requirements.
