AI Summary

This bill addresses firearm storage safety and introduces several key provisions aimed at preventing firearm-related injuries involving children. The legislation creates a new criminal offense for caregivers who fail to secure loaded firearms in their residence or vehicle, which becomes a Level 6 felony if a dependent uses the firearm to cause bodily injury or death (escalating to a Level 5 felony for repeat offenders). The bill requires the Indiana Department of Health to develop educational resources about firearm storage for pediatric healthcare practitioners and allows these practitioners to discuss firearm safety during well-child visits. Retail dealers must now display signs informing the public about the legal consequences of unsecured firearms, and the law defines specific terms like "loaded firearm" and "secure a firearm" to provide clarity. The bill includes exceptions for inoperable and antique firearms, as well as situations involving self-defense. Additionally, the legislation appropriates $50,000 to the Indiana Department of Health to support the development of educational materials and training resources related to firearm safety, with the goal of reducing accidental injuries and deaths involving children and firearms.
