This bill, known as the Future Advancement of Academic Nursing Act (FAAN Act), authorizes the Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to nursing schools to address critical challenges in nursing education and workforce development. The grants can be used for increasing the number of nursing faculty and students, expanding schools' capacity to respond to public health emergencies, and modernizing nursing education programs. Priority will be given to schools located in medically underserved areas, health professional shortage areas, rural regions, and noncontiguous U.S. territories. Specifically, grant funds can be used for enhancing student enrollment and retention (with a focus on disadvantaged and underrepresented groups), retaining and hiring diverse faculty, establishing clinical education partnerships, modernizing infrastructure and educational technologies, creating research programs, and developing interdisciplinary educational partnerships. Schools receiving grants must submit annual reports, and after five years, the Secretary must provide a comprehensive report to Congress detailing the grants' impacts, including student enrollment data disaggregated by various demographic factors, effects on faculty diversity, clinical partnerships, and infrastructure modernization. The bill authorizes $1 billion in appropriations to implement these grant programs, with funds remaining available until expended.
