This bill requires sheriff's departments in Tennessee that participate in a federal 287(g) program, which is a program allowing state and local law enforcement to perform functions of federal immigration enforcement, to accept and honor any immigration detainer issued by federal immigration authorities. "Accept and honor" means that the sheriff's department must hold an individual for 48 hours, excluding weekends and holidays, beyond their scheduled release time if an immigration detainer is received, to allow federal immigration authorities to take custody of that person, and must also notify federal immigration authorities as soon as possible before releasing the individual.
