This bill amends South Carolina's existing law regarding special military service license plates by adding "Submarine Veteran" as a new category of special license plate that the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) may issue. The bill maintains the existing requirements for special military license plates, which include that the qualifying active or prior service member must be a registrant of the vehicle, and that applicants must provide official military documentation (such as a DD-214 form, NGB Form 22, or official orders) proving their service. The special license plates will be issued for a two-year period and are subject to regular motor vehicle registration fees but no additional specialty plate fees. Submarine veterans will now be able to obtain these specialized license plates, joining other military service branches and designations like Army, Navy, Air Force, and various reserve and National Guard components. The bill takes effect upon approval by the Governor, allowing submarine veterans in South Carolina to soon have the option of displaying their service on their vehicle license plates.
