This bill establishes the South Carolina Purple Star School Program to support military-connected students and their families by creating a voluntary designation process for schools that demonstrate exceptional support for military families. The program allows schools to apply for a three-year Purple Star School designation by meeting four key requirements: (1) having a military liaison who identifies military-connected students, provides transition support, and coordinates professional development, (2) offering professional development to at least 70% of faculty about military-connected student issues, (3) creating a dedicated webpage with resources for military families, and (4) developing a student-led transition program to help new students acclimate. A "military-connected student" is defined broadly to include dependents of active duty, National Guard, and reserve service members, as well as children of service members killed in the line of duty and veterans. Schools that earn the designation must display their award status and can be required to reapply or may lose the designation if they fail to continue meeting the established criteria. The program aims to reduce transition burdens for military families, recognize schools committed to supporting military-connected students, and establish a statewide protocol for identifying and supporting these students.
