This bill amends South Carolina's existing kratom regulation law to clarify restrictions on kratom products. Specifically, the bill prohibits kratom processors and retailers from selling kratom products to anyone under 21 years old and from selling kratom products that meet certain problematic criteria. These criteria include products that are adulterated with dangerous non-kratom substances that could harm consumers, contain poisonous or harmful ingredients listed in specific state drug control sections, include fully synthetic alkaloids (such as fully synthetic mitragynine or 7-hydroxymitragynine), have residual solvents above standards set by the U.S. Pharmacopeia-National Formulary, or fail to meet established labeling requirements. Kratom, a plant native to Southeast Asia traditionally used for medicinal purposes, has been a subject of ongoing regulatory debate, and this bill represents an effort to ensure consumer safety by setting clear standards for kratom product production, distribution, and sale. The bill will take effect immediately upon the Governor's approval.
