This bill requires student athletes in grades seven through twelve to undergo an annual physical examination within twelve months before each athletic season and receive a one-time electrocardiogram (EKG) before their initial participation in interscholastic sports, starting in the 2027-2028 school year. The bill defines key terms such as "student athlete," "healthcare provider," and "participation," and specifies that the physical exam and EKG must be conducted by a licensed healthcare professional trained in EKG diagnosis. Students can be exempted from these requirements if their parent or guardian submits a religious objection or if a healthcare provider issues a medical exemption. The bill also addresses liability, stating that if a student is exempt, the school and athletic organizations are not liable for injuries resulting from undisclosed medical conditions. If a student receives an abnormal EKG, they cannot participate in athletics until receiving medical clearance. School districts are encouraged to seek partnerships to provide low-cost or free EKGs, and if EKGs cost more than $50 per student, the EKG requirement is waived. Additionally, governing bodies of interscholastic athletics must update their bylaws to comply with these new requirements, and schools cannot participate in competitions sanctioned by non-compliant organizations.
