Currently, when a retired member is re-employed, they must pay employee contributions to their retirement system as if they were an active member, but do not accrue additional service credit. The bill clarifies that a retired member who is rehired in a position covered by a different retirement system will remain a member of their original retirement system, continue to make required employee contributions, and have their employer remit the corresponding employer contributions. Specifically, this means a retired SCRS member working in a PORS-eligible position would still be considered a SCRS member, and vice versa. The bill aims to provide clarity and consistency in how retired members are treated when they return to work in public sector jobs, ensuring they maintain their original retirement system membership while contributing to that system. The changes will take effect upon the Governor's approval.
