AI Summary

This bill amends an existing Michigan law concerning domestic violence prevention and treatment by adding a definition for "common household pets" and including provisions for sheltering these pets alongside domestic violence victims. The bill expands the definition of terms like "family or household member" and "dating relationship" and updates references to government agencies. Specifically, the bill now allows shelter programs for domestic violence victims to provide supportive services for pets, which can include providing shelter for animals like dogs and cats. This addition recognizes that victims of domestic violence may be hesitant to leave abusive situations if they cannot ensure the safety of their pets. The bill also makes minor technical updates to language and legal references, such as updating the citation for mental health code sections. The changes aim to provide more comprehensive support for domestic violence survivors by addressing potential barriers to seeking help, including concerns about the welfare of their pets during a crisis.
