This bill establishes a new section of law that allows the Department of Public Safety to set a maximum daily meal allowance for wildland fire employees and fire suppression forces, which are individuals involved in fighting wildfires. This allowance will apply when these individuals are working on uncontrolled fires within the Black Hills Forest Fire Protection District, or outside of it if the Governor has declared an emergency. The maximum amount allowed for this meal allowance will be capped at the current per diem rate set by the United States General Services Administration (GSA) for South Dakota, which is a standard rate used to reimburse federal employees for lodging, meals, and incidental expenses while traveling. The Department of Public Safety will be responsible for publishing this maximum daily meal allowance each year, with the new rate taking effect on October 1st. Importantly, this allowance will only cover meals that are ordered and distributed in a way that the department approves.
