This bill amends Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) Title 49, Chapter 6, which deals with student discipline, by adjusting the grade levels for which alternative schools are required. Specifically, it changes the existing law to remove sixth grade from the group of students for whom a local board of education is mandated to establish an alternative school, and instead includes sixth grade in the group of students in grades six through twelve (6-12) who might be required to attend such a school if suspended for more than 10 days or expelled, provided there is space and staff available, with certain exceptions. This means that previously, grades one through six (1-6) were considered for alternative school requirements, and now the focus shifts to grades seven through twelve (7-12) for mandatory alternative school provisions, while sixth graders are now included in the broader group of older students who could be placed in an alternative school under specific circumstances.
