AI Summary

This bill makes several modifications to Indiana's police pension laws, specifically focusing on school resource officers and school police departments. The bill expands the definition of "school resource officer" to mean a law enforcement officer with sworn authority, specialized training, and assigned to work collaboratively with schools, while explicitly excluding officers from school police departments. It allows school corporations and charter schools to participate in the 1977 police officers' and firefighters' pension fund for school resource officers and newly established school police departments. The bill creates provisions for veterans over 40 years old to be eligible for appointment as school resource officers by waiving age restrictions if they have completed at least 20 years of military service and meet other hiring requirements. Additionally, the bill establishes guidelines for creating local boards to manage pension funds for school police departments, including specifying board composition, membership requirements, and governance procedures. These changes are set to take effect on July 1, 2026, and aim to provide more flexible pension options and hiring practices for school-based law enforcement personnel.
