Driver instructions of law enforcement procedures. Requires the driver education advisory board to consult with the commissioner of the bureau of motor vehicles (commissioner) and the state police department, and advise the commissioner in the administration of the policies of the commission and the bureau of motor vehicles (bureau) regarding driver education in: (1) the procedures of a law enforcement officer during a traffic stop; and (2) the actions a person should take during a traffic stop, including appropriate interaction with a law enforcement officer. Requires the bureau to include in any driver education manual published by the bureau the following: (1) A description of the procedures of a law enforcement officer during a traffic stop. (2) An explanation of the actions a person should take during a traffic stop, including appropriate interaction with a law enforcement officer. Provides that driver education curriculum must include instruction about actions to take during a traffic stop and the appropriate interaction with a law enforcement officer during a traffic stop.

AI Summary

This bill requires the driver education advisory board to expand its responsibilities to include consulting with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and state police about law enforcement interactions during traffic stops. Specifically, the bill mandates that the driver education advisory board provide guidance on two key areas: the procedures law enforcement officers follow during traffic stops and the appropriate actions drivers should take during these encounters. The bill requires the BMV to update its driver education manual to include a detailed description of law enforcement procedures during traffic stops and provide clear instructions on how drivers should interact with officers during these situations. Additionally, the bill amends driver education curriculum standards to explicitly require instruction about traffic stop procedures and appropriate interaction with law enforcement officers. These changes are set to take effect on July 1, 2026, and aim to provide drivers, especially new and young drivers, with clear guidance on how to conduct themselves during traffic stops to promote safety and reduce potential misunderstandings between drivers and law enforcement.
