Under the current law, charter schools were only required to contribute a proportionate share of the cost. The bill specifically applies to referendums where charter schools elect to participate and is based on the total combined Average Daily Membership (ADM) of the school corporation and participating charter schools. The legislation requires school corporations to contact charter schools at least 45 days before voting on a referendum to determine their participation and mandates that participating charter schools must post a detailed referendum disclosure statement on their website at least 30 days before the public election. This disclosure statement must include information such as salary ranges, enrollment demographics, graduation rates, and teacher retention rates. The bill aims to ensure more transparent and collaborative processes for school referendum tax levies, with charter schools sharing both financial and administrative responsibilities proportionate to their student populations.
