This bill requires veterinarians or their staff to inform clients about their right to receive a written prescription for medication that can be filled at a pharmacy of their choice, or to have the prescription filled at the veterinary establishment if it's able to do so. This disclosure must be made verbally during in-person consultations or electronically during telehealth appointments. The client's choice must be documented with a signed acknowledgment confirming they are aware of these options, and this acknowledgment must be kept in the patient's medical records. The acknowledgment cannot include any warnings or assumptions about the safety or effectiveness of using outside pharmacies. Additionally, veterinary establishments must post a sign informing clients of these prescription options. These requirements do not apply if immediate dispensing is necessary to save a life or prevent suffering, or if the medication is a controlled substance restricted by law. This bill will become effective on July 1, 2026.
