Bill Summary

AN ACT RELATING TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS; AMENDING THE TEACHER RESIDENCY ACT; PROVIDING THAT THE AMOUNT OF THE STIPEND FOR A TEACHING RESIDENT BE SET AT A PERCENTAGE OF THE STATUTORY MINIMUM SALARY FOR LEVEL ONE TEACHERS BASED ON THE RESIDENT'S QUALIFICATIONS; PROVIDING THAT A TEACHING RESIDENT MAY WORK AT ANY PUBLIC SCHOOL AFTER THE RESIDENCY INSTEAD OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN THE SPONSORING SCHOOL DISTRICT; PROVIDING THAT A PARTNER SCHOOL DISTRICT OR CHARTER SCHOOL SHALL BE EXPECTED TO OFFER EMPLOYMENT TO A TEACHING RESIDENT DEPENDING ON THE DISTRICT'S OR CHARTER SCHOOL'S STAFFING NEEDS AND THE RESIDENT'S PERFORMANCE.

AI Summary

This bill amends the Teacher Residency Act to adjust the financial support and post-residency employment options for aspiring teachers. Specifically, it changes how the stipend for a teaching resident is calculated, basing it on a percentage of the minimum salary for a Level One teacher, with a higher percentage for those who already hold a bachelor's degree. Previously, a flat amount was provided. The bill also modifies the requirement for where a teaching resident must work after completing their program; instead of being limited to the sponsoring school district, they can now work at any public school. Furthermore, it clarifies that partner school districts or charter schools are expected to offer employment to teaching residents, but this offer is contingent upon the school's staffing needs and the resident's performance, rather than being an automatic guarantee.
