AI Summary

This bill, effective July 1, 2026, amends Indiana law to increase public transparency regarding child fatalities and near fatalities, which are defined as severe, life-threatening childhood injuries or conditions certified by a physician. It requires the Department of Child Services (DCS) to promptly disclose certain information to the public about cases of child abuse or neglect resulting in a fatality or near fatality. This disclosure includes the child's name, age, and gender, the location of the residence, the fact that abuse or neglect was involved, information about any arrests and court records of the alleged perpetrator, and details about previous reports or cases of abuse or neglect involving the child or perpetrator, along with DCS's actions. The bill also allows for the release of additional information upon request, after consulting with the prosecuting attorney to ensure it doesn't harm ongoing investigations, and mandates that DCS protect the identity of those who report abuse and potential victims. Furthermore, within ninety days of completing its report on a child fatality or near fatality case, DCS must provide a summary report detailing its response, any policy changes made, and specific information about services provided, previous reports, and investigations related to the child, their family, or the alleged perpetrator within the preceding five years.
