This bill establishes a new category of distinctive license plates for motor vehicle owners in Alabama who served in the U.S. Armed Forces and received specific combat action awards, such as the Combat Action Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, or Combat Action Medal. To obtain one of these plates, eligible service members must provide proof of their combat experience, like a DD Form 214 or a copy of their award certificate, to their county's license plate issuing official. These special plates will feature designs representing the specific branch of service and award, with the words "COMBAT VETERAN" clearly displayed, and will be issued in lieu of standard license plates for personally owned vehicles. The bill also clarifies that these plates cannot be personalized and are subject to the same transfer rules as other special license plates. Furthermore, it introduces a criminal penalty, classifying it as a Class C misdemeanor, for anyone who falsely obtains or falsely certifies another person to obtain one of these combat action license plates, and the act is set to become effective on January 1, 2027.
