This bill mandates the creation of educational resources and the integration of endometriosis awareness into public education. Specifically, it requires the University of Washington, in partnership with Washington State University and individuals with lived experience, to develop and maintain an online resource center by July 1, 2027, and update it by July 1, 2028, and every three years thereafter, with information on detecting, diagnosing, and caring for endometriosis, as well as best practices for healthcare professionals communicating with patients about the condition; this online resource center will expire on December 31, 2031. Additionally, the bill requires the office of the superintendent of public instruction to include information about menstrual health, including how to distinguish severe symptoms like those of endometriosis from typical menstrual discomfort, when revising the state's health and physical education learning standards, with this requirement expiring on June 30, 2029. Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside of it, causing pain and other symptoms.
