This right is contingent on the offender being escorted by Department of Corrections staff and covering all associated costs, including escort fees, which must be paid to the department in advance of the funeral. The bill also clarifies that the director has discretion to grant furloughs for up to thirty days per year for various reasons, such as visiting an ill relative, attending a funeral, obtaining medical services, contacting employers, or participating in rehabilitation programs, with the possibility of extending this limit for offenders in community release programs or needing emergency medical services.
