This concurrent resolution proposes an amendment to Article VII, Section 5 of the Constitution of Tennessee, which governs election dates. Currently, elections for judicial and other civil officers are held on the first Thursday in August, while elections for members of the General Assembly (state legislators) and the Governor are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, which is also the date for federal elections like U.S. Senators and Representatives. The resolution argues that consolidating all these elections on the same day would save money for the state and local governments and potentially increase voter turnout in local elections. To achieve this, the proposed amendment would change the election date for most judicial officers and elected county officials (except property assessors) to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, starting with the 2034 election, with their terms beginning in December. However, property assessors would continue to be elected on the first Thursday in August, with their terms beginning in September, starting with the 2032 election. This proposed amendment will then be referred to the next General Assembly for further consideration and will be published by the Secretary of State.
