This bill requires towing companies in Mississippi to record specific information from anyone who requests their services to tow a motor vehicle, including their name, phone number, and/or email address, and whether the request came from the vehicle's owner, a law enforcement officer, or a property owner. Failure to record this information will result in the towing company forfeiting all storage and towing fees, unless they can prove the vehicle's owner requested the tow. Additionally, towing companies must report towed vehicles to local law enforcement within 24 hours, providing the same requested information, unless the owner requested the tow. The bill also mandates that towing companies maintain these records for three years and clarifies that failure to make a good faith effort to comply with these requirements will prevent them from charging storage or towing fees. The bill also brings forward existing law regarding abandoned motor vehicles for amendment, which outlines procedures for selling or disposing of abandoned vehicles and distributing sale proceeds.
