Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the public officers law, in relation to qualifications for holding the office of deputy sheriff in the county of Montgomery
AI Summary
This bill expands the acceptable residency areas for deputy sheriffs in Montgomery County, New York. Currently, deputy sheriffs in Montgomery County must reside in Montgomery County or an adjoining county within New York State, unless the state legislature specifies otherwise. This bill amends that rule to allow deputy sheriffs to also reside in Albany County, Delaware County, Greene County, Hamilton County, Madison County, Oneida County, Rensselaer County, Warren County, or Washington County, in addition to Montgomery County and its existing adjoining counties. The Public Officers Law, which governs residency requirements for public officials, is being updated to reflect this change.
