This bill requires school boards and governing authorities of private, denominational, and parochial high schools to create policies allowing seventh and eighth-grade students to participate in high school sports starting in the 2026-27 school year, provided the student has the necessary skill level as determined by the coach or athletic director, has a documented physical evaluation by a healthcare professional to ensure safe participation (with extra caution for contact sports), has written consent from a parent or guardian, and such participation isn't forbidden by athletic associations, state or federal law, or State Board of Education rules. Once a student participates in a high school sport under this provision, they cannot participate in that sport at the seventh or eighth-grade level, but their participation will not affect their eligibility while they are in high school. The State Board of Education is authorized to create rules to implement these requirements, and the bill takes effect immediately upon passage due to an declared emergency.
