This bill amends existing Kentucky law (KRS 72.415) concerning deputy coroner training to allow the commissioner of the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DCJT), or their designee, to grant a deputy coroner an extension of up to 180 days to complete required training if extenuating circumstances prevent them from doing so within the original timeframe. The bill clarifies that if a deputy coroner is unable to complete training due to an injury or illness that prevents them from performing their duties, the 180-day extension period will begin on the date they resume their duties. It also specifies that if a deputy coroner fails to complete the training within the extended period, they will face the same consequences as before, which include being ineligible to perform their duties and potentially termination by the coroner. Importantly, this bill removes provisions related to the reinstatement of eligibility and modifications to the pay of deputy coroners who fail to complete their training within the required time.
