This bill mandates that starting in the 2027-2028 school year, all public middle and high school world history or world civilization courses, excluding advanced placement ones, must include instruction on African history relevant to the course's time period, covering various African kingdoms and empires. Similarly, any non-advanced placement United States history course that discusses the nation's founding must also incorporate instruction on Native American culture and history both before and after the United States was founded, with specific attention to indigenous peoples of various regions. The Kentucky Board of Education will establish academic standards for this required instruction, and school district superintendents will develop curricula that align with these standards. Furthermore, the Department of Education will work with the Kentucky Center for African-American Heritage and the Kentucky Native American Heritage Commission to create recommended curricula, instructional guidelines, and professional development materials for teachers to effectively deliver this new historical content, and also to develop elective high school courses in African and Native American history.
