This bill amends Mississippi law to require drivers to exercise caution when approaching a "disabled vehicle," which is defined as a passenger car, light truck, sports utility vehicle, or other motor vehicle that is temporarily stopped on or near the road because of mechanical failure, a flat tire, overheating, a collision, or any other issue that makes it inoperable or unsafe to drive, and is using hazard lights or other visible safety devices. When approaching such a vehicle, drivers must slow down and, if possible and safe to do so on a road with at least four lanes, move over into a lane not adjacent to the disabled vehicle; otherwise, they must reduce their speed and be prepared to stop. This provision is added to existing requirements for drivers approaching stationary emergency vehicles, recovery vehicles, utility service vehicles, sanitation vehicles, and highway maintenance vehicles that are using authorized flashing lights.
