Specifically, a felon committing this offense for the first time will be guilty of a second-degree felony, and for any subsequent offenses, they will be guilty of a first-degree felony, which carries a more severe punishment. The bill also clarifies that a "felon" for the purposes of this law is someone convicted of a felony offense who has not completed their sentence or probation less than ten years ago, has not been pardoned, and has not received a deferred sentence. This change aims to enhance the consequences for individuals with prior felony convictions who are found with weapons.
