Bill Summary

An Act To Amend Section 73-15-20, Mississippi Code Of 1972, To Provide That A Collaborative/consultative Relationship Between An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse And A Physician Or Dentist Shall Not Require That The Care Of A Patient By The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Be Directed By The Dentist Or Physician Who Is In The Collaborative/consultative Relationship With The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse; To Provide That Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists Shall Not Be Required To Collaborate/consult With A Physician Anesthesiologist During All Phases Of The Anesthetic Period; To Provide That A Physician Or Dentist In A Collaborative/consultative Relationship With A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Shall Not Be Required To Be In A Collaborative/consultative Relationship With A Physician Anesthesiologist; And For Related Purposes.

AI Summary

This bill amends Mississippi law to clarify the collaborative and consultative relationships required for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), specifically Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). It states that a collaborative/consultative relationship between an APRN and a physician or dentist does not mean the APRN's patient care must be directed by that physician or dentist. Crucially, CRNAs will no longer be required to collaborate or consult with a physician anesthesiologist during every phase of the anesthetic period, and physicians or dentists collaborating with CRNAs will not be required to also be in a collaborative relationship with a physician anesthesiologist. This change aims to provide more autonomy for CRNAs in their practice.
