This bill amends existing Nebraska law regarding how the State Treasurer must notify people about property that is presumed abandoned, meaning it has been unclaimed for a certain period. Instead of requiring a notice to be published in an English language legal newspaper in every county where a last-known address exists, the bill allows for publication in a legal newspaper with statewide circulation, or alternatively, a prominent display advertisement that describes how to search for unclaimed property. The bill also clarifies that the State Treasurer is the one who decides whether to publish items valued under fifty dollars if it's in the public interest, and it updates the language to be gender-neutral. The Uniform Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act is the overarching law governing this process.
