This bill amends existing Nebraska law to change how civil penalties are assessed for violations related to modular housing units, manufactured homes, and recreational vehicles, as well as certain rules and regulations overseen by the Public Service Commission. Specifically, it updates the maximum civil penalty for violations of the Nebraska Uniform Standards for Modular Housing Units Act or the Uniform Standard Code for Manufactured Homes and Recreational Vehicles. The bill establishes an initial maximum penalty of $3,650 per violation and $4,562,282 for a series of related violations within a year, and importantly, it mandates that these maximum penalty amounts will be adjusted annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of inflation published by the U.S. Department of Labor. This means the potential fines will increase over time to keep pace with the cost of living. The bill also repeals the original section of law it is amending.
