This bill establishes a three-year pilot program, beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, to reduce food and plastic waste in up to 10% of schools within any school district. The Department of Education will develop this program in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Farm to School initiative, and it will involve partnerships with local food banks to redistribute edible food and divert organic waste for composting, as well as the installation of waste sorting and dishwashing systems, and the elimination of single-use plastics by replacing them with reusable serving ware, though these installations are contingent on legislative funding. Participating school districts must submit annual reports detailing waste diversion, food donations, cost savings, and any challenges encountered, and the pilot program is set to expire on July 1, 2030, with the act taking effect on July 1, 2026.
