This bill amends Florida Statute 1003.42, which outlines required instruction in public schools, to mandate specific content regarding Hispanic contributions to the United States across different grade levels, from kindergarten through twelfth grade. For younger students (K-2), the instruction will focus on holidays, symbols, traditions, significant figures, and the importance of respect. In grades 3-5, the curriculum will cover Spanish exploration, the role of Hispanic leaders in national defense, cultural influences, and achievements in various fields, emphasizing fairness and equality. For middle schoolers (6-8), the bill requires teaching about the impact of Spanish colonization and Hispanic communities on U.S. growth, the effects of U.S. expansion on Hispanic populations, historical contributions, overcoming barriers to equality, and the connection between Hispanic experiences and American founding principles, while also addressing prejudice and unjust laws. High school students (9-12) will learn about Hispanic roles in exploration, colonization, and expansion, participation in conflicts, economic contributions, civil rights leadership, artistic and scientific achievements, the evolution of Hispanic identity, the alignment of hard work with success, instances of infringed freedoms and their redress, civic contributions, and stories of perseverance and innovation. The bill also encourages the State Board of Education to develop standards and assessments for this instruction and takes effect on July 1, 2026.
