AI Summary

This bill, known as the "Tim Tebow Act," allows homeschooled children to participate in interscholastic extracurricular activities, which are school-authorized sports or activities sanctioned by the Mississippi High School Activity Association, within their assigned public school district. To be eligible, homeschooled students must meet the same academic standards as public school students, verified by appropriate documentation such as standardized test results, portfolios, or academic transcripts, and adhere to all school conduct, physical, and age requirements. Parents or guardians are responsible for the student's transportation to and from the public school, and public schools are prohibited from discriminating against these students in team selections. Participation is considered a privilege, not a right, and does not create grounds for legal action. The bill also establishes a "Homeschool Extracurricular Activity Fund" within the Department of Education, allowing school districts to receive $2,250.00 per homeschooled student who participated in extracurricular activities in the previous year, with the Department of Education reporting these disbursements to the Office of the State Auditor. This act does not grant state agencies or school districts control over a homeschooled student's education beyond what is necessary for extracurricular participation.
