This bill, titled the "Better Care for PFAS Patients Act of 2026," mandates that the Director of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) establish an agreement with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, or a similar entity, to periodically assess the health effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are a group of man-made chemicals found in various consumer products and the environment. This assessment will include gathering input from communities exposed to PFAS and will lead to the formulation of clinical recommendations for addressing these health effects. The ATSDR Director will then use these recommendations to issue updated clinical guidance on managing PFAS-related health issues, which will be made publicly available on the ATSDR website and distributed to public health authorities and healthcare professionals. These assessments and guidance updates are to occur every five years, or more frequently if scientific advancements warrant it, ensuring that medical professionals have the most current information to care for individuals affected by PFAS exposure.
