This bill amends Virginia law to include the willful, deliberate, and premeditated killing of a correctional officer, as defined in § 53.1-1 of the Code of Virginia, as aggravated murder, a Class 1 felony, when the killing is done to interfere with the officer's official duties. This addition is made to an existing list of offenses that constitute aggravated murder, which already includes the killing of law-enforcement officers and other public officials under similar circumstances. The bill also specifies that if the offender was 18 years of age or older at the time of the offense, the punishment for this new category of aggravated murder will be a mandatory minimum sentence of life imprisonment.
