This bill amends Florida Statute 782.08, which deals with assisting self-murder, by revising and providing criminal penalties for specific actions related to it. Previously, the law addressed deliberately assisting another in committing self-murder, classifying it as manslaughter. This bill introduces two new categories of offenses: first, it makes it a first-degree felony, punishable by specific sentencing guidelines (s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084), for a person who knowingly uses force or duress to cause another person to commit or attempt self-murder. Second, it establishes a second-degree felony, also punishable under those same sentencing guidelines, for a person who intentionally aids or abets another in committing or attempting self-murder, provides the physical means for it, participates in the physical act, or intentionally advises or encourages another person to commit or attempt self-murder. The bill is set to take effect on July 1, 2026.
